On 13 December 2025, the Sentinel-2 satellite passed over East Oweinat, deep in Egypt's Western Desert near the Sudanese border — one of the most remote farming projects on Earth. What it found looks less like agriculture than a sheet of graph paper: hundreds of perfect green circles printed onto raw sand, each one a center-pivot irrigation arm drawing fossil water from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer far below.
There is no town here, no river, no rain — only the geometry of a pivot arm rotating around a well, turning a disc of desert green while the square corners between the circles stay bare. Some discs run deep emerald, some pale and half-planted, some still empty dirt waiting their turn, so the whole grid reads like a colour chart laid across the Sahara.
