A December pass over East Oweinat, deep in Egypt's Western Desert near the Sudanese border, pulled back to take in the whole irrigation field at once: green pivot circles scattered across the pale Sahara in loose constellations, clusters and outliers and lone circles trailing off into empty desert. No town, no river, no rain — only the geometry of irrigation blooming across the Sahara on fossil water drawn from far below.
