On 26 June 2026, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on the Simpson Desert in Australia's Northern Territory and found the reddest ground on Earth: iron oxide-stained sand, ancient and wind-carved into long parallel dune ridges that run for kilometres like combed hair. In the middle of it all, a single claypan holds water after recent rain, glowing an improbable emerald green against the rust-red desert — a landscape most people will never see, somehow rendered even stranger from directly above.
