Chaiten volcano's small reddish crater, scarred by its 2008 eruption, sits beside the far larger glaciated bulk of Michinmahuida — one dormant giant next to a much younger scar. Chaiten town and its silt-stained fjord fill the lower corner, the only sign of people in a frame otherwise given over to forest, ice, and rock.
