On 20 March 2026, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on Butte, Montana, and found the Berkeley Pit: a retired open-pit copper mine whose flooded main basin reads pale grey-white from orbit, ringed by rust and tan terracing. Beside it, a smaller active retention pond glows an almost unnatural emerald green — mineral chemistry doing what no dye could. The city grid of Butte itself sits just below, an ordinary town beside an extraordinary hole.
