On 6 July 2026, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on Chuquicamata in Chile's Atacama Desert, one of the largest open-pit copper mines on Earth. Concentric terraces spiral inward in rust, tan, and grey, tailings fields fanning out around the pit like sediment around a wound, all of it set against the driest desert on the planet.
