On 3 July 2026, the Sentinel-2 satellite looked down on farmland reclaimed from the Qaidam Basin desert near Golmud, Qinghai, a short distance from the Qarhan Salt Lake system. Centre-pivot irrigation circles and a hard rectangular grid of fields push bright green against tan desert, with a cluster of greenhouses and outbuildings tucked into the corner — cultivation squeezed out of one of the driest basins in China.
